Why now

From 2027, the Digital Product Passport (DPP) will become mandatory across the EU — including for side streams in food processing. Companies that do not build their data infrastructure today will have to do so under time pressure. AgriFoodLoop implements a DPP-compatible data model from the outset and actively contributes its extensions for biological side streams to European standardisation processes (CIRPASS, DIN/ISO TC 347).

The agriculture and food industry currently lacks the digital tools to systematically capture and evaluate side streams. Its IT landscape is fragmented, data standards are missing, and there is little decision support connecting producers, processors and users. AgriFoodLoop closes this gap with an open, interoperable platform built on four technological pillars.

The platform is based on a standardised data model compatible with the EU Digital Product Passport (DPP), enabling maximum interoperability across the value chain.

The software core is open source (Apache 2.0), enabling broad use and transparency while supporting a sustainable ecosystem around the platform.

The platform is designed for multiple material flows from the outset. Two use cases have already been tested in operation — with real industry partners, real process data and measurable results.

Water cycle &
algae cultivation

Starting point
Fruit and vegetable processing generates nutrient-rich process water every day. Until now, it has required costly treatment and disposal. AgriFoodLoop turns it into a resource.
Approach
Nutrient-rich process water from juice production (approx. 30 m³/day) is used to produce biomass.
Partner
A. Dohrn & A. Timm (Diedersdorf), ILU Potsdam, Algoliner GmbH (Messel, Hesse) — photobioreactor technology.
Objective
The alga Galdieria sulphuraria uses nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon from the wastewater to produce animal feed or colourants.
Result
Process-water disposal costs are eliminated. Algal biomass creates new revenue as biofertiliser, fish feed or colourant.

Mycoprotein from
brewery residues

Starting point
Brewers’ spent grain is rich in protein, produced every day and still rarely used profitably. AgriFoodLoop and Kontor N / Eat Beer Biotech close this gap.
Approach
Spent grain and yeast from beer production are converted into high-quality food ingredients.
